The Dana Point Surf Club Presents The Hurley 2019 Spring Classic
It’s time for the surf battle of the board shops during the first ever Spring Classic Dana Point Surf Shop Challenge on March 30. Surf shops involved include Hobie, Infinity, Killer Dana, Girl in the Curl, and Jack’s Surfboards. The event will begin at 8:00 a.m. with an awards presentation at 5:00 p.m. The Monarch Beach Resort will provide breakfast, and The Beach Hut Deli will provide lunch. Many of the surf shops with teams competing will also be hosting tents on site.
Each shop will sponsor a team of 26 male and female surfers to compete in divisions from 14 years of age and under through 50 plus years of age. The entrants will be competing in the Classic and for a coveted spot on the Dana Point Surf Club – top finishers in each age category will automatically qualify to represent Dana Point in the West Coast Board Riders series.
To kick off the competition, there will be a very special opening prayer and blessing by the spiritual leader of the Juaneno Band of Mission Indians, Acjachemen Nation who will be joined by competing surfers and tribal members on the first official week of spring.
Dana point prides itself on our local surf culture, and nothing makes us happier than seeing hometown surfers and shops competing together. The Spring Classic will be an important annual event and cultural celebration that young and old surfers from Dana Point will always be able to call their own.
The Dana Point Surf Club is a member of the West Coast Board Riders Club, providing an opportunity for its members to take on other surf clubs in competitions up and down the coast. Members of the club are also encouraged to represent more than competitive surfing by giving back to the community. One example was a special event in 2018 when Club members organized and volunteered to host a surf session for young kids from the Boys & Girls Clubs of Capistrano Valley as part of the first annual California Surfing Day.
