The Dana Point Youth Board

The City of Dana Point is one of the few communities in Orange County that has a Youth Board that consists of resident High School students getting involved and being active in making a difference in their community.

The Youth Board provides service to the community at events that happen throughout Dana Point.  This includes the Winter Festival, Festival of Whales, Egg Hunts, Dana Point Grand Prix, the Turkey Trot, and others. They also provide an opportunity for the youth to have a voice in the community, as they are an active board under the City Council, just like the Planning Commission, and the Arts & Culture Commissions.

Every year, we take applications from local teens and put together a board of members. This year, there are seven members and two members-at-large. The two at-large members are people who have termed out and are no longer able to serve on the board but provide a leadership role in running meetings, advising on projects they can get involved in, and participating in the service activities. If you are a Dana Point high school student and missed the application deadline to be on the Youth Board this year, we still invite you to attend the public meetings on the first and third Thursday of each month to get involved. The Youth Board is also encouraged to attend city council meetings and act on other city initiatives that affect local teens.

As the seasons are starting to change, the Youth Board has started preparing to host  the annual Holiday Home Decorating contest on Thursday, December 13.

This year the Youth Board is going to be working with the Dana Point Times to publish “Candy Cane Lanes” where those who enter will be put on a route for those in the community who want to see the holiday lights around town. The Youth Board is also looking to get sponsorships and prizes from local businesses for the winners of the contest.

This year it is going to be bigger and better than ever, bringing Christmas into the New Year! If you or someone you know own a local Dana Point business and want to get in on the festive fun please contact the board here, or if you want to enter your home in the contest, please fill out the form!
